Your Assignment

Every Junior at JCHS is required to complete a research paper on a controversial topic.  

You begin this assignment Sophomore year with topic selection and preliminary research.

This guide is to help you complete your required research.  

Contact Ms Turgel for assistance finding and accessing library resources.

Your timeline for this project: 

Sophomore Year: Select topics and develop research questions

Summer Assignment: Collect and analyze resources on your topic.  Details will be available on Ms Callaghan's website prior to summer vacation

Junior Year: Complete your research and write your research paper 

 

Library - Day 1

Agenda

You will need: Graphic Organizer - Top 10 Topics

  1. Browse News Sites on the "Select a Topic Page" of this guide.   Look for topics that interest you.  Remember: Topics should have a pro/con argument.  
  2. List your topics in the graphic organizer.
  3. Develop research questions for the topics that you choose.
  4. Repeat these steps using "Recommended Websites" and "Databases". 

 

Library - Day 2

Agenda

You will need: Graphic Organizers - Keyword Chart & Top 3 Topics  

  1. Look over your top ten topics.  Select your top three choices.
  2. Develop or refine a research question for all three topics.
  3. List keywords that relate to each topic.  
  4. Submit completed "Top Three" to your English teacher!

Choose a topic that interests you and the research process with be much more enjoyable!
